Gifford Miller - - City Council Speaker and Candidate for Mayor

By Pamela Skillings, About.com

City Council Speaker: Gifford Miller
was elected to the City Council at the age of 26 and became City Council Speaker in 2002.
Platform: A life-long New Yorker, Miller cites education as his top issue. He has also been very vocal in criticizing Mayor Bloomberg's single-minded focus on building a West Side Stadium and attracting the 2012 Olympics.
Miller's Chances: Miller has been endorsed by former Council Speaker Peter Vallone Sr. and other community leaders and leads his opponents in fund-raising. However, opinion polls show that Miller's popular support lags well behind that of Ferrer and Fields.
